How to Make Sugar Syrup (Easy 1:1 Recipe)
Share
Sugar syrup, also known as simple syrup, is a must-have ingredient for cocktails, coffee, and desserts. Below, we’ve put together a classic 1:1 sugar syrup recipe using white sugar, but you can also use other sugars like raw, brown, and demerara. Each type of sugar brings unique flavors and works well with different spirits—brown and demerara sugars pair beautifully with whiskey and rum.
The Key to Perfect Sugar Syrup
To get the right consistency, always weigh your ingredients just like in any other recipe. Precision ensures a well-balanced syrup that blends smoothly into drinks.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup (200g) white sugar
- 1 cup (240ml) water
Instructions:
- Measure sugar and water accurately.
- Heat water in a saucepan over low to medium heat (avoid boiling).
- Stir in sugar until fully dissolved (takes about 2–3 minutes).
- Let cool, then transfer to a sterilized glass bottle.
- Store in the fridge for up to 1 month.
Tip: If you want a richer, thicker syrup, use a 2:1 ratio (double the sugar).
In a Busy Bar and Need Sugar Syrup Fast? Try These Methods:
Method One: Shake It!
- Measure sugar and water straight into a jar or bottle.
- Shake vigorously until fully dissolved.
Method Two: Use Hot Water
- Boil the kettle and pour hot (not boiling) water over the sugar.
- Stir until dissolved.
- Caution: If using a glass bottle, make sure it’s not cold before adding hot liquid to prevent breakage.
What Sugar Syrup Ratio is Best for Mixing Drinks?
The ratio you use depends on the drink:
- 1:1 (Standard Syrup) – Ideal for cocktails like mojitos, margaritas, and iced coffee.
- 2:1 (Rich Syrup) – Sweeter, thicker, and perfect for whiskey-based drinks like the Old Fashioned.
